Congratulations are due to ALt-J for winning this year’s BARCLAYCARD mercury music prize for being the most irrelevant, trivial band that no-one really likes in Britain this year. Commiserations to Django Django (for being on the list in the first place);; did one of the judges actually speak to one of their cool teenage sons/daughters?) I cannot think of more worthy winners of the award; only six months ago I was speaking to musician friends about how there was a gaping hole in modern music, one that could possibly have been filled by Mumford and Sons , if only they had been intellectuals. Enter Alt-J. I dreamt I met them once, and they were such nice boys, from good families, with nice teeth. I thank their parents too.
Let’s celebrate their win with a song from one of the most genuinely visionary lyricists in British music, Mr Ben Wallers.
P.S, Dear BARCLAYCARD mercury music prize judges, can you fix it for the jazz band to win next year?
